Growth and Development
School, friends and playing will take up most of your child’s time during these years but family time is also important. Spending time with the family as a unit is an important part of your child’s developing identity and fostering a sense of belonging to a group. Try to maximize family time by eating dinner together, working on homework and even watching television as a unit as way of strengthening the family bond during this critical stage.

As your child approaches the pre-teen years you may notice another growth spurt as well as opposing behaviors and responses that deviate from the normal of the past. Your child is entering adolescence and experiencing the physical and emotional changes that come with it. Physically boys may experience hair growth in their pubic area, underarms, legs, chest and face. Their voices may become deeper and you may notice an increase in muscle mass. Girls will experience the same hair growth, coupled with breast development and menstruation. Your child will no doubt have questions about the changes they’re undergoing and parents should try to engage with their children and inform them about the changes that are occurring and let them know that these changes are normal. Start a conversation with child about sex and the importance of love and commitment in a healthy relationship.
